I was so happy to meet the artists yesterday. We had some very interesting discussion for a couple of hours. Everyone shared their point of view, talked about writing a mission statement and described a brief overview of their art.
I started writing this blog because I'm hoping to get across my intentions, and the nature of this project. SYNERGY is not a known entity, because it has never been done before. This is not a competition or a show that has the same parameters as those which have previously transpired.
Evolving Perceptions is the non profit that sets up certain guidelines in terms of SYNERGY having the right foundation. In order for SYNERGY to be viable to the grant making agencies, we needed to have a qualified jury to select the participants. Maryam Ovissi, who is the chairperson of Evolving Perceptions, has been involved with art curating and artists all of her life, as her father is a well known artist. So, I depend on Maryam to keep us within the guidelines of what is appropriate for SYNERGY to function as a viable project.
As an artist, I want the same things for the participating artists, that I would want for myself. Originally, I planned to be a participant. This project has come a long way, and now I find myself to be the facilitator. This is fine. I'm happy to work with artists, because what I want is to learn from everyone.
I am an artist with an idea, who has been very persistant in following through with it. I am not an art commission. I've spent more than a year with no compensation to try to get a movement going to spark some art energy into this region. It's the intuitive connection that I'm looking for, not the intellectual one.

Beyond Synergy

WOW.......I've been trying to post for 3 days. I changed my password and I think it will work now.
The opening of Beyond Synergy at Ann C. Fisher Gallery in Georgetown was very well attended. I was pleased to meet the artists and very happy that they got this opportunity by applying to the SYNERGY project. The art is diverse and interesting. The artists will be gallery sitting on Saturdays, so go see the show and meet them.
This is an invitation to the Beyond Synergy artists:
Please comment and tell us about your art making process and what you think of the art in the show. If I am creating a body of work for a showing, I might find myself at twilight still in bedclothes and covered in paint. I like to get my creative consciousness flowing before daily BS sets in, so I can stay in the "zone". What I am trying to acheive in a painting or express in words comes out more honest before the daily grind.
Today when I woke up, the first thoughts were " because I need to accomplish something." It's a "time of life" kind of thought. I can look back and seperate my life into decades. I lived in the islands for 22 years, but it was one life in my 30's and another in my 40's.
Because I feel passionately about my art and my fellow artists, I won't abide that we shrug our shoulders and accept that DC is not the place for an artist, or that when a DC based artist becomes established, then they'll make it to a NY gallery. WHY? This town is full of very well educated, cultured, international, sophisticated, powerful people. There was a time when we had a true posse of DC greats, who were as revered as any NY based artist.
We cannot underestimate the power of the press. I answered the critic from the Post because I believe it is imperative that our newspaper supports our art community. The art buying public reads the paper. They are swayed by the critic's opinion in the cleverly written articles. The reader who is planning to invest in art doesn't find legtimate critiques about the DC art community in the Post, but finds instead, huge scathing put downs. Thus, the Post is guilty of starving artists, undermining gallerists and robbing this city of it's artistic identity.

crack o'dawn

Up early for our monthly meeting at the salon. Anything can be tedious or banal if you let it be. It's up to us to energize our surroundings. I could be really put upon that I don't paint every day any more, or I can make the most of the what I am doing. The marketing people at Ratner Co. are helping me to put together a "cut-a-thon" to support SYNERGY. I am so excited to have this opportunity for the project. It's a win-win event and fun for everyone. This is what D.C. needs......to do something different. We're thinking of art and music and haircuts all at once.
Gotta go. Rainier artist lofts. I moved in, in May. If you want to know about it, check out www.artspaceusa.org. My loft is one of the ground floor spaces, which are the biggest ones in the building (1250 sq.ft. w/ 13ft. ceilings). This is great, but the catch is that it had cement floors, no closets and only one bedroom. Thanks to a lot of help from my friends, Dorothy (the psychic from Eastern Market) and Pat (my neighbor and fellow artist), it now has tiled floors, painted walls and some closets from Ikea. I started a mural in my daughter's room and I plan one for the living room, as well. I'll start to post photos soon.
I haven't had much time for painting lately. As soon as my living space is squared away, I'll get back to the easel. For the last 4 years I was showing at Eastern Market every weekend. It was too cold this winter to deal with it and I had persistant sinusitis, so I stopped setting up. I'm addicted to the place, so I still go to shop and visit. If you haven't been to EM, you should check it out.
The SYNERGY arteams will be coming here for a meeting on Aug. 14, and I hope to make more progress before then. It will be great to meet everyone!

full disclosure

I have 2 lives......
When I lived in the islands, I actually did survive as an artist. I am a single mother and my family was none too thrilled that I was trying to make my way in an art career. Upon returning to MD for my daughter, Samantha, to go to high school in Montgomery County, it became apparent that pursuing a living as an artist was not sensible. So I called an old friend, Ann Ratner, who owns Bubbles Hair Salons. (My alternative career is hair). In the 70's it was very fun and creative.... and a great way to blend my 2 major interests: art and the party. I was 20ish and, let's just say I'm one of the people who has a dim but colorful memory of the time. Anyway, one of the 1st places where I worked was Bubbles Salon at 2020 K St., NW. In the past 30 yrs, every time I passed through this area when I was "off island," I would call Ann and she would find a spot for me at one of the Bubbles salons. This time, when we returned in 2001, she had a spot for me right back at the 1st store on K St. I am the manager at K St. now and I really appreciate that I have that paycheck. It's much more interesting to pursue the art career as a matter of choice, rather than necessity.
I've been thinking of a fun way to share SYNERGY with Bubbles.
Stay tuned.

Happy Independance Day

Independance.............hmm.......to not be dependant........
Here's a fantasy: Being an artist who could paint, dance, sing, act , write, etc. with no worries of meeting ends. Well then, the others would say..........don't we all want to do what we want to do?
Yeah, but, some people should really be free to develop their art. A talent is a terrible thing to waste. Talent is such a slippery thing to grasp. It's a blessing and a curse. It gives the bearer the responsibility of a parent. It's this thing that must be fed and nurtured, that can't be ignored or it wreaks havoc on the artist's psyche. So we artists are talking to each other and cooperating with one another by piling our talents together to make us a force to be reckoned with. And my thinking is, that if one artist has magic, then several together are that much more powerful.
Independance for an artist always has a gallerist, a dealer or a patron attached to it, if the art is to be seen, sold and talked about. What if we become interdependant, as well? Then we can share our strengths and have support for our weaknesses.
Just some thoughts on independance.

Let's have fun

Frustration.......I just wrote an entire post that disappeared. Now I'm supposed to write something fun................deep breath
OK....what I am trying to say is:
SYNERGY was born from the sparks that flew between artist and critic. It was shaped by the tools of practicality and is maturing with the generation of arteams. All of this chemistry is nurtured by the interaction of the fans of art. Specifically, this project is hoped to energize, revitalize, reinvent, ......... excite the DC community about the art and artists that are here. We are not a suburb of New York. Our local art community is diluted by politics, a transient population and the limitation of the size of this city. But why let that hold us back? Once upon a time there was a highly esteemed posse of DC artists. I hear from my friends in Baltimore that they feel the same way. As a matter of fact, half of the arteams are from Baltimore. They ask the same question that we do:
Why do the serious collecters go to New York to purchase art?
Because the dealers send them there!
How can we change this?
We make it cool to buy art here.

Contemporary art is a matter of opinion. What is hot is agreed upon by the people who get to say what is hot. ( Paris Hilton???)
We can shape opinion by getting exposure. Great art happens everywhere.......not just in NY.
What do you think?

What are we doing?

It took me forever to edit the last post. Sorry for the typos, etc. I think I'll try to get it right the first time from now on. I've gotten some feedback that is very helpful, as well as connections to like minded artists. I want to talk more about what SYNERGY plans to accomplish. The arteams will be creating their own designs. We are not doing cubes. The original challenge in the letter to Blake was off the top of my head. The cube idea was just for the sake of argument. Here's a draft that we are working on which should answer most questions:

__________________________________________________

With the administrative expertise of our D.C. based nonprofit, Evolving Perceptions, the artists of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area are conspiring to engage in SYNERGY, a project that will bring the community together in a powerfully creative way.

SYNERGY's goal is to empower the artists of the Washington D.C. area :
to articulate the energy of art through documentation
to share art with the public in a totally new paradigm
to have artists work together to engage the viewers, both young and old in entire project and the final exhibition

Overview:
In May 2005, the teams listed below were selected from over 70 submissions by artists of the D.C. metropolitan area. We invited artists of all cultural backgounds and/or diabilities to apply. We succeed in achieving a wonderfully diverse panel of artists. The six SYNERGY Arteams will be creating art works for a final exhibition that will travel from Washington D.C. to Baltimore, MD. The exhibition will open in Fall 2006 at the Anne C. Fisher Gallery, 1054 31st Street, Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

Each team will be filmed as they are in discussions and creating by Washington D.C. filmmaker Nigel Parkinson, Jr., director of Focus Entertainment.

The final exhibition will consist of:

1- Exhibition of Teamart works
2- Film preview of the SYNERGY documentary by Nigel Parkinson
3- Arteam panel discussion about the SYNERGY experience
4- KIDPOWER will have a collaborative art workshop and initiate programs with art teachers in Washington D.C. and at art centers (ie Washington VSA arts and Art Enable) to invite their kids to participate in a collaborative art workshop. This will be for children 12 years old and under. They will create a collaborative temporary public art piece in the Canal Square- 1054 31st Street.
3- An Opinion Documentation System (ODS) to ask thought provoking questions to encourage viewers to examine their attitudes, emotions and experiences to the Arteam exhibition.
4- All community comments will be posted on SYNERGY’s blog http://synergyartproject.blogspot.com/.

* The following Arteams applied as teams :
(cultural heritage, age and disability is noted if disclosed):

Arteam 1: Julianna Dail, Ukrainian-American
Mina Cheon, Korean-American
These local artists are interested in creating a work that addresses the trafficking of women as a sexual commodity in Korea and Ukraine. Cheon works in alternative multi-media. Dail is a painter.

Arteam 2: Dawn Cochran, American
E. Minna Philips, India
Cochran and Philips are interested in how people relate to spaces they inhabit. People have a relationship to their environment that involves an individualized experience and response.

Arteam 3: Juliette Madison, African-American
Michael Platt, African-American,
Madison and Platt are interested in combining the media of printmaking with ceramics. Platt is a printmaker. Madison is a traditional ceramicist.

Arteam 4: Rick Delaney, American
Zoe Charlton, African-American
This husband and wife team have just recently begun collaborating.

** The following two teams were created by partnering individual artists:

Arteam 5: Daniel Venne, French-American
Irene Chan, Chinese-American
Venne is an illustrator who works in the tactile arts of pen and ink. She has extraordinary technical skill and wit. Chan's works are free flowing books of handmade paper and fiber which incorporate Chinese philosophy.

Arteam 6: Ann Stoddard, American,
Shannon Chester, American
Stoddard is a multi-media installation artist who works primarily with social issues. Chester is the youngest artist in this project. She is a photographer who deals with the human condition.

Jury Panel

The following local art dignitaries selected the SYNERGY teams:
Leanne Mella, Senior Visual Arts Program Specialist, State Department
Leanne Mella is a contemporary art specialist focusing on American artists' work in film, video, performance, photography and new media. A founding member of the Film and Video program at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Ms. Mella directed Cross Currents, an exhibition and exchange project that she developed linking American and Russian contemporary artists. In 2001, Ms. Mella joined the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State where she is a Senior Visual Arts Program Specialistwith responsibility for U.S. participation in major international visual arts exhibitions; the International Partnerships among Museums program, and other special projects.

Laili Nasr, Curator of Art, National Gallery of Art.
Laili Nasr is an art historian at the Department of Special Projects in Modern Art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, where she has been working on the catalogue raisonne of the Abstract Expressionist painter Mark Rothko for the past 10 years. Prior to that, she held a variety of positions ranging from lecturing at museums to managing a number of art galleries in the DC area. Ms. Nasr received her bachelor's degree in art history and French literature from Tufts University in Massachusetts. Her graduate studies were in art history and museum management.

Anne C. Fisher, PhD, Anne C. Fisher Gallery
Dr. Fisher’s background as a classical ballerina and as a dance therapist and clinical psychologist center her view of the arts as essential to the positive development of the individual, the community and the culture. This vision is the basis for her approach to the gallery as a support for artists and the important work of the artist in society, as an opportunity for increased personal awareness, healing and growth through exposure to art and artistic process, as a space for community gathering, and as philanthropy, by sharing gallery proceeds with other arts-based organizations. Fisher is the Founder and Director of The Center for Being & Becoming, through which she and other artists and arts therapists offer experiential group workshops for personal growth centered in the arts.

SYNERGY’s Audiences

Artists
SYNERGY's goal is to bring the whole of artistic community together to integrate artists of different backgrounds and disciplines. Artists are the most important audience we are serving. They will grow from their experience working on the Arteams and with the administration of SYNERGY. Artists who are not on the Arteams are more than welcome to participate in this process on different levels. We have an amazing song that has been written by Michael Jantz, a musician who is new to D.C. from Cleveland. We sponsored an event at The Ratner Museum in Bethesda, MD which integrated dancers with visual arts, live painting, poetry and music. We will continue to create events to energize SYNERGY.

Community-at-large
The public is generally left out of the art experience. Art is put in front of them, usually with very little context to their everyday life. What if the community gets a chance to see the artists at work? What if they hear artists discussing the execution of art in the nature of the collaborative compromise? What if a public art project actually lets the public in on the project as it is executed? We have a blog page to show the progress of SYNERGY and to encourage dialogue between the artists and anyone wants to talk to them: http://synergyartproject.blogspot.com/.

Timeline to date:

Jan 2005 Launch of Call for SYNERGY
KARMA restaurant, NW,DC

May 2005 Jury selection of arteams for SYNERGY
Klutznick Museum

May 14, 2005 Fundraising event at The Ratner Museum, Bethesda
" The Artists Reality Show"
Evolving Perceptions announced arteams for SYNERGY

August 1, 2005 OPENING : “Beyond Synergy”.
Juror Anne C. Maryam did all of the administrative work with the jury. She's the one who understood that process. The jurors spent several hours discussing and considering the slides of the applying artists. It was their decision to divide the teams into twos. Some of the artists applied as teams, and some who applied as singles were paired with a complementary artist. The more than sixty artists who applied were impressive. We are very satisfied with the response to the call. Six teams of two artists were selected. When I conceived this notion, I thought I would pick the teams. Maryam has a lot of experience with putting together exhibitions and felt that a jury was necessary. As you read in the previous post, we were honored to have these established gallerists to select the teams.
My first thoughts for an event to announce the selected arteams was a costume ball. We talked about it at the meetings. It's a gala that I would love to host one day, but it just was too big an undertaking for us at this point. After some consideration, the idea of a performance party emerged. We hosted an event on May 14, at The Ratner Museum, in Bethesda. The artists, musicians and dancers who performed for "The Artists Reality Show" were fabulous! For one performance, dancer/ artists Sarah, Bita and Mahasti carried out paintings by painter Nancy Unger while music played. They danced amid the art and Nancy narrated a poem. In the end, Sarah Barzmahri spoke her own words. The piece was about Iraq. In another performance, Mahasti and another artist choreographed a piece in which they painted each other to music. In August, they will perform at Anne C. Fisher Gallery in Georgetown, when we have our SYNERGY showing for some of the applying artists who did not get placed onto teams. Musician Michael Jantz, wrote an amazing song for the project that we will record. The instruments are bongos, guitar and violin. It has a Middle East, Caribbean, sexy energy that is awesome. There was also an inclusive art project by teacher/artist Nancy Unger in which everyone drew on paper to music. We hung the paper from the ceiling in a darkened room with lighting on the art while music played. It was very effective. More later.......

organizing SYNERGY

After the first meeting at Karma, Maryam and Evolving Perceptions officially adopted SYNERGY. Maryam named the project and we considered a timeline and a jury to choose the artists who would participate on teams. Here's a description of the project: 1. artists apply to participate on a team of 2 to 4 artists to create a piece of art of various mediums that they choose and design 2. in the application each artist describes why they are interested in collaboration 3. a jury panel selects the artists and places them in teams 4. the teams become a part of the project as a whole and all of us discuss the process of creating the art and sharing this experience through film with the public 6. the art making, filming, continual fundraising events and activities and consciousness raising ensue 7. final exhibition and gala 8. a public vote and discussion along with viewing of the SYNERGY documentary.......That's it in a nutshell. It's a huge undertaking. We had a second meeting for artists on Jan. 24 at Karma. It was a snowy day, but there was a respectable turnout. Maryam published a brochure and began working with several grant making foundations. The call for artists went out, to be submitted by March 30, 2005. We both started planning an event to take place at The Dennis and Philip Ratner Museum in Bethesda, to announce the artists who were selected to participate on teams. Maryam put together a very distinguished jury panel: Leanne Mella, senior visual arts program specialist with the State Dept., Laili Nasr, curator of art, National Gallery of Art, and Dr. Anne C. Fisher of Anne C. Fisher Gallery in Georgetown. I'll tell you about the jurying process and "The Artists Reality Show" at The Dennis and Philip Ratner Museum, in my next post.

OK, now what?

So here I am, a year ago, trying to get other artists interested in this concept. I was showing at Eastern Market ( www.easternmarket.net) every weekend at that time. There is a wealth of talent there. The three artists I thought would be great to work with on this project were supportive, but had mixed feelings about it. However, Tom Rall who is the market manager on Sundays was very proactive and wrote a great article for the web page. Tom was our first contributer to the cause. I am a stubborn woman and once I got this notion in my head, I was determined to make it happen. I forwarded some e-mails around to the press. I sent a few to Mr. Gopnik and he finally answered me. Essentially his first response was a polite, "no, that's not a good idea". We did engage in further discussion and I have to say he sent a long and thoughtful answer. I disagreed with his point of view, but through this discussion formulated a public art project that will entertain and enlighten the public, as well as challenge the artists. Lucky for me, Andrew Noyes of Voice of the Hill ( Stein's project ) newspaper was intrigued by my quest. At my referral, Andrew interviewed Maryam Ovissi, the president of a nonprofit called Evolving Perceptions. Maryam and I had talked about the as yet unnamed SYNERGY project, and she and her board were considering taking it on. Maryam is an administrator with experience in art projects. She suggested that we have a meeting to see what kind of interest the project would generate among the art community. Our first meeting was held Oct. 18th, 2004 at Karma Restaurant, 19th and I Sts, NW, DC. Thanks to Lenny Campello of www.dcartnewsblospot and Jesse Cohen of www.artdc.org , we had a lovely turnout of very accomplished artists. Here's some names: Tim Tate ( glass artist), Lenny Campello www.thefrasergallery.com , Jesse Cohen( photographer), Maggie O'Neil ( Pandala Anderson), Kaytie Didriksen ( painter of the notorious portrait of Bush from the Funky Furniture exhibit at City Museum), Dave Mills ( graphic artist and painter who has helped a lot), Michael Jantz (our token musician who wrote an amazing song for SYNERGY at www.michaeljantz.com),
several panda artists and a great turnout from the Washington Glass School www.washingtonglassschool.com. We had 30 artists in attendance and the meeting was filmed by Nigel Parkinson of Focus Entertainment. It was a great beginning!!

Here goes

This is my first post to the SYNERGY art project blog. This is exciting! First of all, I am going to talk about the history of the SYNERGY project:
SYNERGY was born on March 30, 2004. It has grown and evolved through discussion with artists and art critics. SYNERGY was invented as an answer to the complaint that public art projects have been "dumbed down" for the general population. Specifically, there was an article written in The Washington Post on Sunday, March 30th, by art critic Blake Gopnik that was very critical of the DCCAH's Pandamania public art project. ( Forgive me, I'll figure out the linking stuff soon enough.) The panda that I painted was featured in the article. When my colleagues from Eastern Market handed me the paper that Sunday, I was so excited to see my panda in the Arts section. Imagine my dismay to read the very lengthy negative article that accompanied the photos of several pandas. After some discussion with friends, it was concluded that inclusion in the arts section was a good thing and I cheerfully composed a response letter as soon as I got home. John Pancake, the arts editor, very kindly included my letter among 8 or 9 others in the next Sunday's section. In the letter, I challenged Mr. Gopnik to a cube contest. If he would round up the 4 0f the 6 talented artists that he referred to in his article, I would team up with 3 of my colleagues from Eastern Market and we would paint cubes. Once the cubes were designed and painted, the public could vote on their favorite and we would see if Mr. Gopnik's assertion that there are only a half dozen truly talented artists in this city was remotely accurate. Of course it was all in good fun, but I really needed to make this happen.
I talked about the possiblities with other artists. The idea of some reality art show stuff started to come up. What if the teams were filmed while they discussed their concepts and the necessity of compromise? Now that there are artists who are working together to create art, there must be verbalization of the process. When one artist creates, they don't need ( or usually want) to put it into words. What does it sound like when artists talk to each other about a visual concept? Will the average Joe get it? What about personalities? How does what an artist portrays, reflect the artist? Can 4 or 3 or 2 very different artists agree on what they will create? Can we film the artists as they work that will be entertaining and enlightening? How do we bring the public at large into the process?
These are some of the quesions that SYNERGY wants to answer. I'll talk more about the challenge of bringing the concept to life on my next post.
